From Pixels to People :

Becoming a Design Lead

There was a time when my world was beautifully contained inside Figma frames.

Spacing. Hierarchy. States. Edge cases.

If it moved by one pixel, I noticed. If it broke the design system, I fixed it.

Then one day, my title changed.Senior Designer quietly became Design Lead.

Same desk. Same tools. Very different universe.

Design Was Never “Just Design” But Now It Really Isn’t

As a senior designer, my superpower was depth.
I could disappear into a problem, resurface with clarity, and ship something polished.

As a lead, the work became… wider.

Now I design systems and conversations. I think in flows and trade-offs.

I don’t just ask “Is this usable?” but also “Is this realistic for this sprint?” and “Who needs context before this decision lands?”

Turns out, good UX doesn’t live only in interfaces. It lives in alignment.

My Figma Zoom Level Changed

Earlier, I zoomed in. A lot.

Now I zoom out.

I look at how decisions ripple across teams. How one small UX call can save dev time or create weeks of rework. How saying “yes” too quickly or “no” without empathy can stall momentum.

Ironically, I still design. Just not always on the canvas.

Sometimes I design clarity. Sometimes confidence. Sometimes a calm path through chaos.

Delegation: The Skill I Didn’t Know I Needed

No one tells you this part clearly.

Leading isn’t about doing more.
It’s about letting go… thoughtfully.

Trusting others with pieces of work I once guarded closely wasn’t easy.

But it taught me something important:
my impact grows when I stop being the bottleneck.

Seeing teammates own decisions, ask sharper questions, and ship confidently feels better than any pixel-perfect screen I’ve ever delivered.

From “Can You Design This?” to “What Do You Think We Should Do?”

The questions changed. And so did my responsibility.

Now I’m expected to:

Advocate for UX when it’s inconvenient
Make calls when information is incomplete
Support developers during build, not just at handoff
Hold the line on design decisions while staying flexible

It’s less about being right. More about being intentional.

Leadership Isn’t Louder, It’s Clearer

I used to think leadership meant speaking more. Turns out, it’s about listening better.

Reading the room.

Knowing when to push, when to pause, and when to step back.

It’s showing up consistently. Especially when things are messy.

So, Did I Leave Senior Design Behind?

Not really.

I still love crafting interfaces.

I still care deeply about quality and details.

But now, I care just as much about people, processes, and long-term impact.

I didn’t stop being a designer. I just started designing how design happens.

And honestly? That might be my favorite project yet ✨
